Suffering from depression, Mrs. Mullins (Miranda Otto) has difficulty caring for the children. The family begins to investigate after noticing strange occurrences in their house. The Mullin's father John (Anthony LaPaglia) travels to Los Angeles to purchase a vintage doll named Annabelle in an antiques shop owned by one man named Mr. Mullins (Tony Amendola). The doll is found in the shop, but the shop owner explains that he did not know anything about it. He offers to sell it to John for $200. Later that night, after putting Annabelle in her room, she wakes up and makes her way into Bonnie's old room. John tells his wife to take Anne back to her room while he watches the house. When Annabelle is left alone, she stands up and watches him from behind a door. Anne hears something in the closet and rushes to open it, finding nothing there. Anne's baby sister, Judy, is crying and their mother is unable to comfort her. Anne uses sign language to calm Judy down. Later that night, John is awoken by a noise and enters Annabelle's room only to find Annabelle sitting upright in a chair.
